Have you ever taken a webinar for Facebook or Twitter to learn online marketing and feel like you were missing something? You were. A full comprehensive online marketing strategy!
It should come as no surprise to you that to be successful online, you have to have a plan. Once you take action on this plan, you measure your results and then update it with changes as necessary. Your plan should be generic enough so that you can implement it on any social media platform you choose. It’s not the platform that’s the important part — it’s how you interact and what you do on that platform that’s important!
To create an online marketing strategy that works for you takes a little bit of time, but its well worth it! You should have defined elements that translate to daily tasks you can accomplish. These action items are considered income producing activities – which are the tasks you want to focus on to generate leads and get sales.
The secret benefit to creating this online marketing strategy is that once you learn how, you can implement this strategy on any social media platform you choose — even one that doesn’t exist yet! You are covered and are ahead of the game.
One caveat: does that mean you shouldn’t learn tips and tricks about a platform to maximize your results? Of course you do! Think of that training as advanced – get your marketing strategy squared away first, then work on the details. After you learn specific tips and tricks about that particular platform, and then you will be unstoppable!
Here are three brief tips to get your started on creating your own online marketing strategy.
1. Have An Amazing Profile
First, complete your profile. There are some basic tips about branding here and here, but in general, you want your profile to look professional. Make sure your picture is of YOU, not you and your dog or a pretty sunset. Smile. Have a short bio that talks about who you are as a person, not just what you do for business. Have a couple of links for other social media (if possible) so that others may be able to keep in touch. And, although I have mentioned this in other posts before, it bears repeating: be consistent and have your profiles look the same!
2. Gain Followers/Friends
Friend request or follow people that are in your target market. Don't forget to add your friends, colleagues and family as well! For some platforms, this is easier than others. You can easily follow others on Twitter, but you must send a friend request for Facebook or a connect request for LinkedIn. In those cases, you may want to establish a relationship or connection first. Following people on Facebook before creating a friend request works great. Sending direct messages introducing yourself and making a friend will work too (don't send them links or talk about your business!). The general rule is to build your followers by following people first.
After a while, you can unfollow those who don't follow you back. This opens up space for you to follow others if there is a limit on how many friends/followers you can have. The key to gaining followers is consistency. Do this every day!
One word of caution: Don't follow/unfollow too fast. Many platforms have limits and rules and consider that spam. So ensure you know the rules and limits and work within them so you don't get sanctioned or banned. For example, you can only follow 1,000 people per day on Twitter. When you start out, you should start small and work your way up to the limit.
These followers are your leads. Interact with them (like the friendly human being that you are!). When you post content, post items that they will be interested in – and make it mostly free, valuable content. Take your relationship offline and call them. Followers turn into leads which turn into sales!
3. Use Tools To Help You
Implementing your online marketing strategy can sound daunting – there are a lot of tasks. Use tools to help you! Many online tools have free and premium versions, although the free versions will most likely have some sort of limits. Don’t be shy – investing a few dollars a month in a premium version is well worth it! Tweet Jukebox is a great way to tweet your content to Twitter on a regular basis. Hootsuite can also schedule your social media content – and you can connect Hootsuite to more than one platform. For every social media platform, you can find a tool to help you manage it. Creating content ahead of time and scheduling your content is a great way to save time. If you are anything like me, you don’t have a lot of free time so these tools can be a great help!
