Ever wonder how online marketing works? Most training that you run into will tell you how to do online marketing, but don’t spend a lot of time telling you how it works. While you don’t need to know how the inside of a car works to drive it, it does help to know the basics so that you can maintain it properly and understand basic repairs that you will need. Well, same thing with online marketing! Once you understand the basics of what you are doing, you can more easily apply what you learn – and when new social media platforms or the other latest and greatest online thing comes out, you can be on top of the game by applying the basics to the “new thing”. Fair enough?

Online Marketing

Online marketing is informing the public about your business through the internet. It is another marketing strategy used by most businesses today, from the smallest home business to big Fortune 500 companies. The beauty of the internet for the small business owner is that you can look like a pretty big sophisticated business online and compete with the biggest of them if you know how to do it right! Everyone has a fair chance on the internet.

Hub & Spoke

wheelSo what is the hub & spoke strategy? Just like a wheel has a core with spoke coming from it, the hub is the core of your business. It is the content and offerings that you own. When you create a blog, you own that content, you can monitor comments on the blog and can do whatever you want with it. It is YOUR space. You want to take that content and distribute or syndicate it all over the internet. Your goal is for people to come visit you at your home; your hub. You do that primarily via social media, which are the spokes.

You don’t own social media. You cannot place anything you want on your profile — in fact, at the discretion of the owners, you can be banned or censored at any time. The social media platform could shut down. Everything you have built on that platform — your content and your followers — could be gone in a second.

Social media is a great way to gather followers and generate leads. However, you don’t want your followers to stay on that social media platform! You want them to visit you at your hub, where they subscribe to your content and you can create a relationship. Once they subscribe to your content, they end up on your list.  Just like your blog, you own this list. You own these relationships; and again, nobody can take that away from you.

Your interaction with your followers should be both on social media and your home — or through your list. When they are on your list, they become your prospects or leads. After you create your valuable content and give it away to your prospects, your next job is to then foster a relationship with them. Who are they? What do they want? What do they need? Only then can you offer them a product, service or opportunity. By then, they will love you, trust you, and want to work with you. When you put up your offerings, they are more likely to purchase.

If you are a visual person like me, it helps to see what I am talking about. I show you the hub & spoke model here:

Understanding this hub & spoke concept is an important basic strategy to learn. There will always be changes in the internet and through social media. That doesn’t matter — the basic concepts of marketing apply. You have something to offer. You figure out your target market and find them on the internet. You interact with them — by providing valuable content — and bring them to your home, where you find out their needs and then offer your product, service or business opportunity. This is literally the same thing brick and mortar stores do in the real world! Marketers define and find their target market; they advertise — bringing their customers to the store, usually by informing them of a sale (that’s the value), and then, once they come to the store (their home), they sell their product or service.

Remember that network marketing and affiliate marketing both have the same word in it: marketing. Once you get the foundational concepts down, you can apply them anywhere and be ahead of the competition!

I hope this helped you. If it did, please comment and tell me what you thought. And don’t forget to share: sharing is caring! 🙂

To Your Victory,

Audra

  1. Audra, this is awesome! I agree with you that everyone must learn the basics. I also agree about using your blog a your hub. It’s the center of your marketing and all other things lead to it.

    Great post
