Do you want a real work from home job? Have you ever posted to a group to ask for one and all you got were pitches for business opportunities? Or worse, scams? Hey, perhaps you were even searching for one on a job board and come to find out it’s a business opportunity! I hate that! Well, I got you covered!
The Difference a Job and a Business
I probably don’t have to tell you, but there is a difference between a job and a business. And it’s pretty simple. With a job, you have responsibilities, you report to a boss and you get a regular, consistent pay check (benefits, unfortunately are optional). If you don’t show up for work, no paycheck. You can be fired. You cannot just do what you want.
A business is vastly different. They all involve some type of monetary investment. Yes, every business, even very small home-based ones, have expenses. You will need to spend some money. However, your time is your own and there is nobody to report to. You cannot get fired – unless you fire yourself! Of course, if you don’t put in the work, you don’t get paid — but it’s not a paycheck. It’s income – and maybe even profit!
You may be thinking — “uh, DUH Audra! I know the difference!” And that’s true. But some of you readers might have home businesses and many network marketers or affiliate marketers always send links to people when they ask for “work from home jobs”. Don’t do it. You look desperate and quite frankly, stupid. There are better ways to approach someone about a business. I know that’s harsh. Sorry not sorry.
Working From Home
With that being said, there are plenty of legitimate jobs that allow you to work from home full time or part time. For many companies, it is becoming a part of the culture! Many jobs out there advertising you can work from home are entry-level, but you can get jobs in your career that are mid or senior level. In fact, my current job (yes, I’m still full time!) is work from home most of the week. Those opportunities are out there, and they are amazing when you can find them!
Successfully Working From Home
You have to have the equipment and personality to do this. Some jobs will give you everything you need. Most will assume you have your own internet connection — a good one is mandatory. Some will set you up with a phone line, but most will assume you are going to use your own for phone calls. A phone headset is preferable for phone calls – hands free is going to be super convenient. A webcam is also helpful for meetings.
You also need a dedicated space. It doesn’t have to be an entire room, it can be a corner. But you do need a desk, chair and space to put all your stuff. Some jobs will require you have a separate room – check with your employer. To work from home, it is worth it to sacrifice a room for an office!
Babysitting should be assumed. If you have small children, you should still put them in daycare. It is not appropriate to have your little children or babies around disrupting your work. I understand that many parents want to work from home to save on these expenses — but if you want to be trusted, you shouldn’t count on being able to take of your children and work at the same time. If your children are school age, then that’s different. As long as you have an understanding with them that you are not to be disturbed unless fire, you should be ok. Being at home when your kids get off the bus and setting them up with a snack while they do homework is absolutely fine. So is the occasional half day, school holiday or even sick day. And if your baby is sick, that’s an exception. They obviously need to stay home with you!

This should be obvious, but I do use affiliate links on some things. I will never recommend something I don’t use myself, and you don’t spend any extra money, but I get a few cents for the recommendation. Hey, don’t hate — duplicate!
