If you want to be massively successful in network marketing, you really should employ both online AND offline strategies, including cold calling. Yes, there are masters out there KILLING it in the online world, but even they will tell you that you have to get out of the virtual world and talk to real people (ask Ray Higdon)! Especially in the beginning when you are trying to make money quickly, and gain some momentum. So yes, cold calls are a part of that.
Many people don’t want to do this for two reasons: fear and “I don’t know what to say” syndrome.
I have something to say about fear. I know this is a cliché, but “every master was once a disaster”. The reason you are probably fearful is that you feel that you will sound stupid or that you will experience rejection. Well, there are ways around that for sure. There is another, very simple way to get over it.
Practice. Yup, old fashioned practice.
In the beginning, if you want, role play with your sponsor or a friend. That will certainly help.

Getting cheap leads and calling them is one of the best ways to practice. Why?
- You are not looking for results with these leads. You are purposely buying cheap, older leads. Could there be some leads that turn into prospects? Of course. But the point is to PRACTICE, and practicing on strangers over the phone makes it easy! They can’t see you and you never have to talk to them again if you mess up. So, no pressure.
- Getting a number of leads will keep you on task. Writing your list is great – but remember, that’s warm market, not cold market. In order to grow your list, you need to constantly expand your network. You obviously want to do that, but it takes time. Getting 1,000 leads means you have 1,000 people to reach – you have a numerical goal and can track your daily results. It’s a system that for folks that need daily tasks and specific direction will help immensely. You can track success based on completion of the tasks (making phone calls) and that’s HUGE. And a self confidence builder.
- Dani Johnson, another leader in the industry, says that it takes practicing your calls 1,000 times before you get comfortable – and skilled. So, get the practice BEFORE you talk to your warm market, fresher leads, or referrals – you will have a much greater chance of success when you do talk to them.
- Where else, other than the phone book, are you going to quickly get 1,000 phone numbers to practice? The phone book won’t do (does anyone have a phone book, anyway? LOL). Those aren’t TARGETED, and when you go to a reputable company to purchase leads, they certainly will be targeted.
So, about those scripts.
You can do a Google search and get a bunch of links for various scripts. There are a lot of good ones out there, and everyone has a different style. I definitely like Tom “Big Al” Schreiter’s approach and I’ve gotten some great lines from Ray Higdon. My favorite script book, though, especially for cold calls is Dani Johnson’s Script Book. I’ve used this book extensively – and in fact, I still use this book. This book comes with CDs where Dani role plays so you can get a feel for how these conversations go. She tells you what to do and, most importantly, what not to do. Very valuable advice.
The best thing I like about these scripts? I TELL people I’m reading from a script!!! I do this because I want my prospect to know that I’m not a super experienced person who is only getting somewhere because I’ve been doing this awhile – and they could never be that good. I want them to know I’m reading from a script; and if they join this business, they will be reading from a script too. You hear this word a lot, but there is a reason: DUPLICATION. You want your prospect to understand, that, just like a franchise, they will be given tools and procedures that they simply copy and then teach their team. Scripts are one of those tools. If they can read a script, they can get success.
So, here’s a little secret about this strategy. The very reason why I tell you that you can get massive results.
Those cheap leads you purchased? They were cheap because they had been sold before, or are aged (had been gathered awhile ago, so not fresh). You would think that these leads had already been approached.
A large percentage of people who purchase leads don’t call them.
Yup. You read that. So there is a big chance your lead has not been approached. Plus, you are armed with fancy scripts to make you sound like a pro. Which means you may just get results from practicing. How cool is that?
